A note from the Builder

Why This Exists

I struggle with change and motivation, same as most people. I'm still very much figuring it out, not writing from some finish line. Everything, including this app, is a work in progress.

I dug the spiral, instantly.

The first time I saw the spiral shape for tracking habits, all of it visible at a glance, it was satisfying in a way I didn't expect. Not a grid, not a checklist, a shape that actually held a whole month at once.

I didn't want to go digital.

A printed spiral habit tracker template with a pencil resting on it

So I found an empty spiral template on the internet, printed it out, and took it with me on a road trip. It worked perfectly for thirty days: filling it in by hand with a pencil, one day at a time. Filling it in felt like its own kind of accountability, proof, in my own handwriting.

Thirty days later the sheet was full, but also crinkled, slightly torn, and with a few food stains on it. I printed another for the next 30 days, and after that, another. At some point, I lost the original sheet, and with it, any real sense of how I was doing over the longer run. While there was something almost romantic about paper, it doesn't travel well, doesn't help with continuity, or drawing insights or showing trends.

Craving a single source of truth.

So I looked for an app with a spiral orientation, the thing that pulled me in in the first place. But I couldn't find anything close. That's when the idea to build my own app first came to mind.

At the time, I was using lots of apps for tracking various things for my personal life. Google Tasks for my life to-do list, WHOOP and Strava for health and fitness, Notion for some notetaking and reference content. And another random app for tracking my intermittent fasting. Some consolidation made too much sense.

Not having one source of truth was demotivating on its own, too many places to check. So I asked myself what I actually wanted to track every day, almost like a form of journaling, and set out to build one app that could hold all of it, a source of truth I'd actually keep coming back to.

Not every habit needs the same treatment.

A meditation habit is a yes or no. Water is a number climbing toward a target. Mood isn't done or not done, it's a feeling I wanted to rate, not check off. And even the numbers weren't all the same: steps are good going up, screen time is good going down. Once I stopped forcing all of it into one shape, the tracker finally started to fit how I actually live instead of a form I was filling out.

Some habits are related, too, so I built in a way to nest them together, cardio and stretching under Workout, say, instead of scattering them as five separate entries.

Designed to keep me coming back.

The fun thing about building your own app is that you can change things to exactly how you want them. Not feature requests, just near-instant iteration.

The original name for the app was Habit Streaks, because I was motivated by the idea of streaks, but the longer I used it, the more I noticed: missing a day here and there was perfectly fine in the habit-forming or habit-kicking process, in fact, it was normal. But a broken streak buries that.

I started building out more trend-based visuals and insights. I also changed the miss symbol from a bold red X to a simple dot. No need to emphasize misses. Same information, said more softly.

Allowing for novelty.

I'm the type of person who rearranges the furniture every couple of weeks just to keep things feeling new, and it turns out I like to do the same thing with my habit tracking: change the color, flip the direction, swap the pencil for a marker. A source of truth is no good if you stop opening it, so the app changes right along with me, not because it needed more settings, but because staying interested is part of staying consistent.

Where is this going?

I'll be honest: I don't fully know what I'm building yet. This is a work in progress, a system I'm trying to make fit a brain I don't claim to have figured out. Discipline is hard. What I want is something that sticks, not just through the good stretches, which is the easy part, but through the bad ones. The flat days where the honest feeling is just "who cares." I don't have that solved entirely but I know something, I keep logging by habits and ratings every day in this app.

The accountability runs both ways, too. I'm not deciding what gets built next on my own, I'm building it based on what the people actually using this app tell me they need. If something's missing for you, say so, and it goes on the list.

This app has helped me stay accountable in a way nothing else has. Maybe it's the spiral, maybe it's a consolidated source of truth, maybe it's the novelty factor, or maybe I was just finally ready to hold myself accountable.

If you give this a shot, please let me know how it works for you.

Why it's different

It sticks. Here's why.

Not just on the good days. On the flat ones too.

Skin in the game

A dollar on the line, plus a buddy and a community whenever you want them. That's the whole premise. If you're here, you're trying, and this app does everything it can to help you follow through. It's never about perfection.

A surprisingly satisfying logging ritual

It helps you organize everything you want to measure into one clear spiral, thirty days at a glance, or thirty weeks. Filling it in does more than look good. It tickles your reward system and keeps you coming back.

Scratch your aesthetic itch

Pencil, pen, or marker. Dark or light. Clockwise or counter. Sorted however your brain likes. Tune the look and the layout until it feels unmistakably yours.

And it's just getting started. The app is evolving fast, and early users help decide what gets built next.

How it works

Log your habits. See your progress.

That's the whole system. Check in each day, and Buck A Month turns those daily logs into a clear, satisfying picture of your progress.

1

Add a habit

Pick something small, or let Buck's Habit Wizard build your first set with you: choose the areas you care about, tap the ideas that fit, done in under a minute.

2

Log it daily

Each day, tap to check in. The whole thing takes about thirty seconds. That's it.

3

See your progress

Your daily check-ins build into a clear view of your consistency, so wins, streaks and slips are obvious at a glance.

Scratch your aesthetic itch

Four hand-drawn styles

Match your mood and switch the whole look with a tap. Four hand-drawn styles, endless color combinations, all yours.

Classic

Clean, solid arcs.

Colored Pencil

Soft, textured strokes.

Pen

Fine, inky lines.

Bold, juicy color.

Then paint it any way you like, light or dark, calm or loud, even spun the other way round.

More to love

The little things that make it a joy.

Every habit becomes its own colorful line in the spiral, one you look forward to filling in. Built to make progress feel rewarding instead of like a chore.

A view you'll actually open

See your whole month at a glance instead of a flat checklist, in a single colorful shape you actually want to open.

Streaks, plus the trend underneath

Momentum you can feel. Streak flames when you're rolling, a calm skip protects rest days, and a trend line underneath tells the fuller story.

Fully custom colors

Choose your own done, missed, and streak colors. Make every habit yours, then watch the palette come alive.

True dark mode

A real dark mode that looks great morning or night, easy on the eyes whenever you check in.

Organized by life

Tag every habit by the area it belongs to, Exercise, Sleep, Money, your own, then view by tag, by type, or by what's still ⏰ Due Today. Do-habits and Don't-habits each get their own view, automatically.

Numbers that know which way is up

Steps are better higher; screen-time minutes better lower. Tell each Number habit which direction is good, and every color judgment follows.

Habits that travel together

Nest related habits under one parent, like Cardio and Stretch under Workout, so the things that belong together stay together instead of scattered across separate entries.

A nudge when you need it

One quiet reminder at the end of the day if you haven't checked in yet, so nothing slips through the cracks. Turn it off anytime it starts to feel like noise.

Data exports

Back up and use your data. Export everything whenever you want, so your history is always yours, in this app or wherever else you take it.

One system, not five apps

Habits and ratings, all in one place

Not every habit is the same, so why force it into the same box? A workout is a yes or no. Water is a number with a target. Mood is something you rate, not check off. Buck A Month Habits gives each one the shape it actually needs.

Two kinds of things to track. Habits are a simple yes or no, or a number you count toward. Ratings are a score on a scale, for the things that aren't just done or not. Both live in the same spiral, daily or weekly, so your whole life sits in one place instead of scattered across a pile of apps. That is also what lets you see how things move together.

Workout. Water. Sleep. Screen time. Mood. Savings. Whatever you're trying to change.

Two views, one tap

The spiral to see it. Quick Log to fill it.

The spiral is the picture: your whole month, at a glance, in your own colors. Quick Log is the fast lane: every habit in one tidy list, built to log in seconds. They're the same day and the same data underneath, so flip between them with a single tap and use whichever fits the moment.

When you've got thirty seconds before the day gets away from you, Quick Log gets everything marked before your coffee cools. When you want to sit with your month and enjoy the shape of it, the spiral is right there. No digging, no second screen.

  • One tap to switch. The spiral for the big picture, Quick Log for speed. Same habits, same day, whichever view you're in the mood for.
  • A whole day in seconds. Made, missed, or skipped in a single tap. A stepper for numbers, a quick scale for ratings. Fast enough that you actually keep doing it.
  • The trend, right where you log. Every Quick Log row carries its own 66-day line and score beside the name, so you see whether a habit is sticking in the same breath you check it off.

Progress you can see

Momentum, made visible

A checkmark only tells you about today. A trend line tells you the truth. Every habit carries its own mini charts, so the moment you open the app you can see your momentum building, or quietly slipping, not just whether you checked the box. And when a stretch goes badly, the trend is what shows the low for what it is: a dip, not the whole story.

  • Hot streaks and cold streaks. A flame follows you while you're on a roll, and a cold stretch shows up just as plainly, so you always know which one you're in and what it'll take to flip it.
  • A 66-day trend. Somewhere around 66 days is roughly when a new habit tends to stop feeling like effort and start feeling normal, so every track carries a 66-day line to show whether it's actually headed there.
  • Daily and weekly. Flip any view to Weekly and see the same habits rolled up week by week, color-coded 0–7 fractions in your own palette. Weekly-cadence goals log once a week, no daily pressure.

100
means about 66 days of staying with it, roughly how long a habit takes to feel automatic (UCL research). Hit 100 and you've built it.
Aim for 100

Get it to 100.

Every habit carries a 66-Day Score, a single number from 0 to 100. Reaching 100 means one thing: about 66 days of staying with it, the point where a habit stops being something you push yourself to do and starts being something you just do. That is the goal for every habit you actually care about. Not a spotless record, not a guilt trip. Just proof, in one number, that you can get your 66 to 100 when you really want to.

You won't want a 100 on everything, and that's the whole point. Decide what you actually want to change. When there's something you truly want to start, or stop, every single day, aim for 100 and let the score tell you honestly how close you are. On everything else, ease off. The number is here to guide you, never to shame you.

  • 100 means you built it. A perfect score is about 66 days of consistency on that habit, roughly how long the research says it takes to feel automatic. Reach it and the habit is basically yours.
  • Aim high on what matters. For the things you really want every day, 100 is a clear finish line instead of a vague "keep going." For the rest, no pressure. You choose where to push.
  • Not aiming for perfection. The score leans on your recent days, so a slip doesn't erase your work, and the research agrees: in the UCL study, missing a single day barely dented people's progress. Get back on, and the number climbs again. Progress over a perfect streak, every time.
The long view

Toggle from 30 days to 30 weeks.

The daily spiral shows you today and this month. Switch to the weekly view and something else shows up: months of history you can read in a single look. Watch your habits continue, week after week, and the shape of how you're actually doing becomes obvious in a way no single day can be.

Beyond the habits

A quick to-do list, right beside your habits

Not everything is a daily habit. For the one-off stuff, like a call to make or an errand to run, there's a simple to-do list built into the same screen. Jot it down, check it off, done. No second app, no extra place to look.

  • Add it in a tap. Type a task, hit add, and it's there, a clean, lightweight list with none of the clutter.
  • Check it off. Tap to complete, tap to remove. Your open count is always one glance away.
  • Private, like everything else. Your tasks stay on your device alongside your habits and fasting history.

A fasting timer, built right in

Thinking about intermittent fasting? Start the clock, watch your window fill, and keep it right next to the habits you already track. No second app to download, no extra place to check.

  • One tap to start and stop. The timer counts your window and remembers your last fast, so you always know where you stand.
  • All in one place. Your fast sits beside your habits instead of scattered across tools, so your whole day is a single glance.
  • Just dabbling? Perfect. Try a window, see how it feels, and keep it only if it fits.

A daily journal, right beside your habits

Some days deserve a sentence, not just a checkmark. Tap any day, past or present, and jot down how it actually went, right where you track your habits.

  • Journal any day. A tappable dot sits on every date, filled when there's a note and hollow when the page is still blank.

  • Private, like everything else. Entries stay on your device, alongside your habits, to-dos and fasts.
